Vuong, Dinh win two, Warriors only win one

By Dick Sparrer

Luong Vuong and Phat Dinh each won two matches last week for the Westmont wrestling team. The Warriors, though, could win only one.

Vuong and Dinh helped Westmont roll to a 44-33 team victory over Lincoln in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Vuong and Dinh each won again two days later, but the Warriors lost a lopsided 59-14 to powerful Del Mar.

The split left the Warriors with a 2-3-1 dual match record in the division with just one bout remaining. Westmont will host Andrew Hill on Feb. 5, 6:30 p.m., before taking part in league finals Feb. 13 and 14 at Santa Teresa.

Vuong pinned with 37 seconds remaining at 103 pounds, and Dinh won a technical decision 17-1 at 130 to lead the Warriors to the week-opening win over the Lions.

Aaron Garcia pinned in the third round at 119 pounds to help the Warriors get off to a quick 18-0 lead in the match. Danh Nguyen had won by forfeit at 112.

Lincoln came back to win four of the next six bouts to tighten up the score, but Jose Blanco pinned with seven seconds left to wrestle at 160 pounds, Andrew Wadler won 6-1 at 171 and Greg Woodland pinned in the second round at 189 to clinch the Westmont victory.

Brodie Gorman had picked up a forfeit win at 140 pounds.

Wins had not come as easily against Del Mar. The Dons won all but three bouts in cruising to the easy team win.

Vuong recorded a 14-0 win at 103 pounds and Dinh won 13-4 at 125. Freshman Tony Oka nailed a second-round pin at 135 pounds for Westmont's only other win of the day.
