Weitsman drills six goals in two games

Saratoga boys roll to back-to-back wins

There's nothing the Saratoga boys soccer team can do this week but win and wait. The Falcons, winners of two games last week, boast a solid 8-2-3 record in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

But right now that's only good enough for second place in the division. And with just one game left to play, chances of the Falcons getting a share of the El Camino championship look slim.

The Falcons need a win this week to stay in contention. They host Monta Vista (5-6-2) in a key game on Feb. 5, at 3:30 p.m. But just as important for Saratoga is that first-place Mountain View (9-1-3) loses its final game to be played the same day.

The Falcons put themselves in a position to finish no worse than second in the division with two lopsided victories last week.

A.J. Weitsman pumped in six goals in the two games to lead Saratoga to wins over Wilcox (5-1) and St. Lawrence Academy (6-0).

Weitsman buried three goals and Scott Elfving and Tim Chapman added one each in the 5-1 win over the Chargers. Brad Seago, Trevor Adams, Matt Weidert and Alan Sung came through with assists in the victory.

The Falcons opened up a 3-0 lead by intermission, then outscored the Chargers 2-1 in the second half to roll to the victory.

Saratoga, 11-5-3 for the year, had opened the week with a lopsided 6-0 win over St. Lawrence.

Weitsman had another three-goal day, scoring off assists from Sung, Mark Weiner and Anthony Lin. Weiner drilled a goal off a Daniel Vajdic assist and Sung and Nolan Gaudreau added unassisted goals in the Saratoga victory.

This one was actually closer than the game later in the week, at least for a half. The Falcons were up just 1-0 at the break, but unloaded for five second-half goals en route to the victory.

    Girls win, lose

In girls soccer action at Saratoga last week, Jessica Cone drilled a pair of goals and added an assist and Annie McAllister had a goal and two assists in the Falcons' 6-0 win over Los Altos.

Saratoga, 4-5-4 in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL and 8-7-4 for the year, lost 3-1 to St. Francis in other action last week. McAllister's penalty kick gave the Falcons their lone goal.

    Panthers split

The Prospect girls soccer team split a pair of games last week, beating Piedmont Hills 3-1 but losing 7-1 to second-place Santa Teresa.

First-half goals by Katie Gazlay and Randy Gillespie sparked the Panthers to the win over the Pirates. Gillespie and Natalie Kiyama had assists in the game, and the Panthers benefited from an "own goal" in the win.

Prospect, 7-11 for the year and 3-9 in the division, lost 7-1 to the Saints to open the week. Santa Teresa trails only Mitty in the standings in the rugged Mount Hamilton Division.

A first-half goal by Gillespie off a Tara Rodriguez assist left the Panthers trailing just 2-1 at the half, but the Saints unloaded for five goals in the second half.

In other local action in the division, Westmont fell to 0-11-1, losing 4-0 to Presentation and 5-0 to Mitty.
