Artist to critique at group meeting
The Saratoga Contemporary Artists will be hosting award-winning watercolorist Charlotte Huntley to conduct a critique of members' paintings during the group's Feb. 14 meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in the modular building at the Saratoga Senior Center. In the last 10 years, Huntley has had more than 200 of her paintings accepted in national juried art exhibitions in 40 states, as well as Canada.
Refreshments will be served, and the public is welcome. Saratoga Contemporary Artists is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network, review each others' works and occasionally paint together. For more information, call 408.255.5026 or email jnsno2@aol.com.
Garden show trip is coming up soon
The Saratoga Recreation Department is taking reservations now for a March 21 day trip to the annual San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, which includes two dozen full-scale gardens, more than 400 exhibits, a plant market, an orchid pavilion and many garden-related gifts. Before attending the show, participants will have a hosted lunch at the Treasure Island Advanced Culinary Training School.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The trip is open to adults of all ages. Cost is $54 per person. Space is limited; call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249 for reservations.
Author to speak on great women
The Saratoga Foothill Club has invited author, illustrator and college professor Alice A. Carter to speak on "The Red Rose Girls: An Uncommon Story of Art and Love" at the fourth installment of its 2001-'02 Public Lecture Series, which takes place Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Foothill Club clubhouse, 20399 Park Place.
Carter will discuss the lives of three legendary women artists: Jessica Willcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green and Violet Oakley, who made careers for themselves when most of society followed late-Victorian mores and the women's rights movement was just getting started.
Admission is a $6 donation. Call 408.354.2527 or 408.867.2361 for information.
