Lynbrook pins third straight league win

By Dick Sparrer

Things didn't start out well for the Lynbrook wrestling team.

An injury default at 103 pounds helped Saratoga jump out to a quick lead over the Vikings.

But the Falcons didn't keep the lead for long.

Lynbrook came storming back to win eight of the next nine matches wrestled to pull out a convincing 53-21 victory over the Falcons in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Vikings lost just two matches on the mat and two others by forfeit in rolling to their third straight win in division competition.

Junior Paul Choi gave the Vikes their first win of the day when he recorded a technical fall with a lopsided 19-2 victory at 112 pounds.

Gordon Kwan backed up Choi's win with a pin at 119 pounds. Kwan put his foe to the match with 28 seconds left in the second round.

Senior standout Tony Chen kept the Lynbrook string alive with a 17-4 win at 125 pounds, and Jay Jaing pinned with 59 seconds remaining in the second round at 130.

Decision wins by Steve Mayer at 135 pounds and David Yamasaki at 140 ran the string of Lynbrook wins to six. Mayer pulled out a tight 8-6 victory and Yamasaki won 15-9.

Saratoga's Tim Adams won a tight 9-7 nod at 145 pounds, then Lynbrook went back to work.

Freshman Brian White pinned a minute into the second round at 160 pounds and Charlie Shin pinned 55 seconds into the second at 171 pounds.

Steve Horner was a forfeit winner at 189 and Fred Ramirez won by forfeit at 275 pounds to wrap up the win for the Vikings.

Warriors tie

Westmont battled Silver Creek to a 33-33 tie in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League last week. The tie left the Warriors and Raiders with matching 4-1-1 records in the division.

Pins by Sang Pham and Tim Heinrich helped the Warriors to the draw. Pham pinned with 30 seconds left in the first round at 125 pounds and Heinrich pinned 1:25 into his match at 145 pounds.

Westmont standout Ruben Rodrigues pulled out a hard-earned 10-9 win at 112 pounds to help get the Warriors even with Silver Creek early in the match at a win apiece.

Kevin Walker nailed a 9-3 win at 145 pounds for the Warriors and Mat Meade was an 8-1 winner at 189 pounds. Forfeits went to Jeff Innamorato at 140 pounds and Shantez Sumler at 275 pounds.
