Saratogan scores high in contest

Connie Jean Ing, a Saratoga High School student, was one of 300 students honored as semifinalists in the 55th annual Westinghouse Science Talent Search. A total of 1,869 students competed.

As a Westinghouse entrant, the 17-year-old Ing had to conduct an independent research project in math, science or engineering. Her work, titled "Rotation Periods and Relative Ages of Solar-Type Stars," involved analyzing the rotation periods of solar-type stars to see if a correlation exists between stars' rotation periods and their ages. She also suggested ways to obtain improved data on stars.

Ing is now eligible to compete for 40 scholarships totaling $205,000. If she is selected as a finalist, she will attend the March 6-11 Science Talent Institute in Washington, D.C., to compete for the top 10 scholarships.
