    WVC faculty honored for thinking originally

    The California Community College League gave five "Out of the Box Thinker" awards to the West Valley-Mission Community College District at a recent CCLC conference in Burlingame. The awards acknowledge individuals and groups who are innovative, creative and willing to take risks.

    Those awarded at West Valley College were for the Mission-West Valley Land Corp. and Gladys DeLuca, dean of the instructional computing technology department.

    Saratogan honored for college academics

    Saratogan David Schneider, 20, this fall accepted membership to the National Society of Collegiate Scholars during a campus ceremony at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is a student. The NSCS is a selective, national, nonprofit organization that recognizes undergraduate students who excel academically. Schneider attended Saratoga High and Bellarmine Preparatory School.

    SHS students to perform in All-State Orchestra, Band

    Sophomore violinists Jeff Shiozaki and Stanley Hsu and sophomore cellists Hannah Park and Emily Chang were chosen from more than 1,000 California student applicants to participate in the All-State Orchestra. They are the first Saratoga High School students to be chosen since 1994.

    Senior clarinet player Joanne Sprague and junior clarinet player Jennifer Chu were also chosen from almost 1,000 California student applicants to participate in the All-State Band.

    Foundation donates $585,000 to schools

    The Saratoga Education Foundation presented the Saratoga Union School District with a check for $585,000 at a district board meeting Jan. 26. The Saratoga Education Foundation, a nonprofit volunteer organization founded in 1982, raises funds for SUSD schools through a winter phone-a-thon, gift-wrap sales, a spring jog-a-thon and other fundraising events.

    The donated money will continue to fund library curriculum, grants for teachers and school programs in music, visual arts, science and physical education.
