Saratoga NewsOn CampusCASA announces essay winners Community Against Substance Abuse recently announced the winners to its "Just say no ... Is it really that easy?" essay contest that ended Oct. 30. Local winners included first place finisher Katie Turley-Molony. Roxana Safipour won second, and Jenny Estruth was third. All three girls attend St. Andrews School. UC-Santa Barbara honors local students Several Saratogans were recently named to the Dean's Honors list at UC-Santa Barbara for the fall quarter. The students had to maintain a grade point average of 3.75 and be enrolled in at least 12 units. Those honored include law and society major Sarah Miller Barnes, pre-biology major Bharat Pancholy, pre-computer science major Eric Andre Warmenhoven, and Jane Chien-En Tsai, who has not declared a major. AAPA to host safe community seminar The Asian American Parent Association will host a "Safe Schools! Safe Community!" seminar on Feb. 27 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Saratoga Library Community Room. Santa Clara County Sheriff Department Assistant Sheriff Tom Sing and attorney Tony Christensen will address a variety of topics including: How parents can ensure a safe environment for their children; the warning signs of an at-risk child, and what legal rights parents and students need to know. Redwood teams place first in state competition Two student teams from Redwood Middle School placed first in a statewide competition called "Thinking Cap." A total of nine teams from Redwood entered the Jan. 19 and 20 competition, which has students working together to answer multiple-choice problems. The group must use the processes of elimination, synthesis, recall and calculation to reach an answer. The questions were displayed on a television with one student keying in the answers. Sixth-graders will compete on Feb. 25. SHS students earn spot on all-state ensemble Saratoga High School students Jason Augustine and Richard Park recently earned spots in the California Music Educators All-State Wind Ensemble. They were chosen from among hundreds of California students. The duo will attend a conference ending in a concert at the Indiana University in Fresno on Feb. 12 to 14.
