Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsAAUW plans Chinese New Year dinner The Los Gatos-Saratoga branch of the American Association of University Women holds its annual Chinese New Year dinner Feb. 25 at Hong's Gourmet Restaurant, Fourth Street and Big Basin Way. No-host cocktails begin at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. Rose Marie Twu, president of the Sunnyvale-Cupertino League of Women Voters and former co-chairwoman of the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project, will discuss the restoration of the 125-foot Golden Dragon of the Heart's Delight, a traditional New Year's symbol at San Jose's Kelley Park. The dinner is a fundraiser for a scholarship the AAUW branch awards each year to a promising woman majoring in math or science at West Valley College. Tax-deductible tickets are $25 each. 'Parenting 101' classes available The Parenting Continuum offers parents a series of Wednesday night classes, Feb. 24 through April 28, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the library of Los Gatos High School. The program is known officially as Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP). Facilitators are Joanne Rodgers, Donna Boger and Joan Ellsworth. The Parenting Continuum is a joint project among Community Against Substance Abuse, the Los Gatos-Saratoga High School District Health Committee, A Place for Teens, the Teen Counseling Center and Triad Community Services. Long-distance cyclist shares journey at REI As part of its monthly community events, REI Saratoga hosts long-distance bicyclist John Hunter on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. for a presentation titled "Cycling Across America." In the summer of 1998, Hunter joined 730 cyclists from around the country in a ride from Seattle, Wash. to Washington, D.C. that benefited the American Lung Association. He also participated in the 1998 GTE Big Ride, the largest cross-country event in U.S. history. At REI, Hunter will show slides of his adventures and offer advice on how to train and prepare for long-distance bicycle trips. For more information, call 871-8765.
