Saratoga NewsNews BriefsMeeting held in memory of late city commissioner The Saratoga City Council passed a resolution Feb. 4 dedicating that night's council meeting to the memory of late Heritage Preservation Commissioner Frank Dutro. Dutro, a member of the commission since April 1993, passed away Jan. 15. The World War II and Korean War photographer worked for Lockheed Missiles and Space and was also a member of the Saratoga Historical Foundation, the Friends of Montalvo and the Friends of Hakone. Tax help available at Senior Center It's not too early to begin thinking about tax time. The Saratoga Senior Center is offering free tax-counseling to seniors and others with low to moderate incomes. Tax-aid volunteers are professionally trained and qualified to answer most questions about income-tax return preparation, and are on hand to help with taxes each Tuesday morning until April 14. For more information or to make an appointment, call the Senior Center at 868-1257. The Senior Center is located at 19655 Allendale Ave. Council swears in new commissioners The City Council appointed and swore in Frank Friedrich to Saratoga's Parks and Recreation Commission on Jan. 21. Friedrich's term will last until October 1999. He replaces commissioner Rick Bloom-quist, who recently resigned. And on Feb. 4, the council appointed resident Charles Swan to Saratoga's Finance Commission and administered the oath of office. His term will continue through October 1999. Swan replaces Kathleen Hahn, who resigned from the Finance Commission. PG&E phone line offers outage info Residents who experience power outages because of stormy weather can call the PG&E information line at 1-800-PGE-5002. The system, which lets thousands of residents report outages simultaneously, now also allows residents to receive updates on outages. Customers can find out the cause of the outage, its scope and the estimated time that power will be restored.
