Saratoga NewsOn CampusSaratoga High plans to host annual benefit Saratoga High School will hold its annual benefit on Feb. 27 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. This year's proceeds will be go to the Until There's A Cure Foundation, a nonprofit organization working against the spread of HIV and AIDS. The foundation raises money to fund vaccine development and education. Those who would like to attend this year's event should contact Karen Hyde at 867-3411, ext. 208, by Feb. 19. The cost is $35 per person. The benefit will feature dinner, dancing, a casino and a silent auction. Animal rights group announces contest The Humane Education Network is holding its eighth annual "A Voice for Animals" essay contest, which is open to all high school students. Prizes are awarded to those whose essays best promote the humane treatment of animals in the United States. First prize is $500, second is $250 and third is $100. The 1,000-word essay topic is the understanding and knowledge of the treatment in the United States of one animal species or one animal issue. Students are also asked to explain why the issue concerns them and to discuss what others can do to show respect and compassion for these animals. Entries must be received by Mar. 18. SUSD receives grant The Saratoga Union School District recently received a $1,000 garden/nutrition grant from the California State Department of Education for each of its schools. Each school will use the money to develop a garden to study plant growth and nutrition. Students will also learn about healthy food preparation.
