Saratoga NewsStephen Ministries offers class at Methodist ChurchOn Feb. 21, the First United Methodist Church of Los Gatos hosts the Stephen Series Caring Ministry Workshop, which offers an introduction to a system of training and organizing laypersons to serve as caring ministers in and around their congregations. The workshop's sponsor is Stephen Ministries, a transdenominational Christian organization based in St. Louis whose goal is to provide the training and administrative resources for all Christians to serve as lay ministers. Over the past 20 years, Stephen Ministries has worked with nearly 6,000 congregations, which it estimates have gone on to train more than 200,000 laypersons as caring ministers. The Rev. Christine Shiber, from Oakland's Montclair United Methodist Church, leads the Feb. 21 workshop, which includes the presentations "Ministry to Those Experiencing Grief," "How to Care in a Distinctly Christian Way" and "The Stephen Series System of Lay Caring Ministry." Cost for the workshop, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is $15 per person or $50 for a group of four people from the same congregation. Child care is available by advanced registration. The church is located at 19 High School Court. For more information, call Rebecca Herr at 354-7256.
