Day The Awareness Foundation for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Related Disorders, in cooperation with West Valley College's Theater Department, presents "O.C.D. Day" on Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the college theater. Four experts in the fields of medicine, psychology and education will speak on O.C.D. as it occurs in children, adults and families. Topics include how to identify the disorder, how it is treated--with medicine or other therapies--and how family members can cope with and help a loved one with the disorder. The program is free. Learn the art of Japanese gardening Among the classes offered through the Winter/Spring 1998 Hakone Gardens Arts Program is "The Art of the Japanese Garden," which runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for six consecutive Tuesdays, beginning Feb. 17. The instructor is Bob Yoshito Abe, a landscape designer and builder of meditation rockscapes. Abe will discuss the philosophy and symbolism of the Japanese garden and will explain and demonstrate the significance of stones, lanterns, fences, bamboo, planting materials, ponds and pathways. Scholar speaks on the power of prayer Author, poet and Judaic scholar Dr. Marcia Falk on March 5 presents "Reclaiming the Power of Blessing: An Inclusive Approach to Jewish Prayer" as part of the 1998 Distinguished Lecture series sponsored by the South Bay Institute for Jewish Living and Learning. The program takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Saratoga's Congregation Beth David. In addition to writing a book on new Jewish prayers for holidays and daily life, Falk has translated songs and writings from Hebrew and Yiddish, has taught at several universities and has been published in many magazines, journals and anthologies. Admission is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $5 for those 30 and under. Child care is available with advance reservation. For more information, call 358-3636.
