Saratoga girls earn place in CCS soccer playoffs

    By Dick Sparrer

The season ended last week with a scoreless tie for the girls soccer team at Saratoga High.

But that was the regular season... the season is still going strong for the Falcons.

Saratoga's girls earned a place in the Central Coast Section Division III playoffs and will open the postseason this weekend against the Robert Louis Stevenson (14-3-2)-Norte Dame Salinas (12-5-1) first-round winners.

The Falcons enter the playoffs with an 8-7-5 season record after posting a 4-5-5 mark in the rugged De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Saratoga has won four of six games outside the league this winter.

The Saratoga boys, meanwhile, missed a CCS berth by an eyelash after tying for the championship in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL. Mountain View edged out the Falcons for the postseason berth even though the two clubs ended up with matching 9-2-3 records in the division.

The Falcons clinched the title tie on the last day of the season with a 4-0 win over Monta Vista.

Alan Sung and A.J. Weitsman each had a goal and an assist to lead Saratoga to the win over the Matadors.

Sung opened the scoring in the game when he scored off a Trevor Adams assist, and Weitsman made it 2-0 before the half with an unassisted goal.

Mark Weiner scored off a Weitsman assist to open the second half, then passes from Sung and Brad Seago set up Derrick Wong for the final game of the game.

The Saratoga boys finished the season with a 12-5-3 record overall.

In other local soccer action last week, Prospect held off Westmont to nail a 3-2 win in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Junior Katie Gazlay had a goal and an assist to lead the Prospect scoring in the win, but it would turn out to be an own goal in the first half that would prove the difference in the game.

Gazlay scored the game's first goal and assisted junior Randy Gillespie on a goal later in the half. An own goal made it 3-1 at intermission.

Stacey Tapia scored a first-half goal off a Megan Clapp assist for the Warriors, and Clapp scored off a Tapia assist in the second half to cut the lead to 3-2.

Both the Panthers and Warriors were blanked later in the week. Prospect lost 3-0 to Leland to finish the year 4-10 in the division and 8-12 for the season, and Westmont lost 4-0 to Santa Teresa to wind up 0-13-1 in the circuit.
