The Aegis Gallery plans an exhibit

Aegis Gallery of Fine Art, at 14531 Big Basin Way, unit 2, will be exhibiting the work of three members--Gerri Russell, Ed Lucey and Norma Fries--from Feb. 26 through March 24.

Los Gatan Russell will show her handmade masks, crafted from a variety of materials and embellished with universal symbols and images. Lucey, also a Los Gatan, will exhibit acrylic paintings in a style he calls "painterly realism." Fries, a San Jose resident, will show her hand-manipulated Polaroid images, to which she often adds paint, chalk, colored pencil or rubber stamp embossments.

An artist's reception, with refreshments, takes place March 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. For regular gallery hours or more information, call 408.867.0171 or visit www.aegisgallery.com on the Internet.

    Special Olympics seeks volunteers

The Northern California/Santa Clara County chapter of the Special Olympics is looking for additional volunteers to help its athletes enjoy various spring sports, including tennis, aquatics and athletics. Year-round, the Special Olympics teaches 13 different sports.

The next orientation for volunteer coaches is Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. in San Jose. No experience in sports is required, just enthusiasm and a sense of humor. All volunteers must be at least 16 years old. For more information, call 408.392.0170 or visit www.sonc.org/sccso on the Internet.

Hikers to highlight their 13-state trip

Among the various programs it offers to the community, REI Saratoga has invited cross-country hikers Lisa Garrett and Francis Tapon to give a slideshow and talk about their 111-day adventure last year through 13 East Coast states--from Mt. Katahdin in Maine, down 2,167 miles of the Appalachian Trail to Springer Mountain, Ga. They will also share tips on extended hiking trips and how to keep a backpack light.

The two embarked on their trip to promote Fund for Renewable Energy Everywhere, a nonprofit that assists communities worldwide in developing and implementing sustainable electricity generation alternatives.

There is no charge to attend. REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. For more information, call 408.871.8765.
