Westmont's Gorman wins title at the BVAL wrestling finals
By Dick Sparrer
Garreth Gorman wasn't watching on Saturday when Norway's Kari Traa climbed to the top step of the victory stand to accept the first gold medal of the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City--he was too busy winning a gold medal of his own.
Westmont's Gorman struck gold at the Blossom Valley Athletic League wrestling finals held Saturday at James Lick High School in East San Jose.
Gorman finished first at 173 pounds for the Warriors, and his title certainly came as no surprise to Westmont coach Ron Scadina, who had predicted such a finish for the senior star way back in October, before the season ever began.
In fact, Scadina rated Gorman as a favorite to win both the BVAL and Central Coast Section titles this winter, then predicted that the senior would go on to place in the top eight at the state tournament.
Gorman, who finished second in the BVAL a year ago, outlasted Adrian Morales 10-7 in the finals to clinch the league title last weekend.
Tom Miller and Ryan Kennedy joined Gorman as Westmont placers at the league finals.
Miller, a senior, won by technical fall over his foe from San Jose Academy to clinch third at 191 pounds for the Warriors. Miller had placed sixth in the league meet as a junior.
Kennedy, a junior, ended up eighth at 154 pounds for Westmont.
Prospect's Tony Barba made it to the finals at 277 pounds before losing at the league tournament. Barba ended up second for the Panthers.
