Hakone Gardens program focus is Japanese textiles
As part of the various classes, workshops and programs it offers to the community, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens, at 21000 Big Basin Way, presents a lecture and slide show called "The Language of Flowers in Japanese Textile Design" on Feb. 25, at 3 p.m. in the Cultural Exchange Center.
The program is led by Mary Hays, who, with her husband Ralph, has studied textiles throughout the world, translated Japanese books and written scholarly articles on Japanese textiles. The couple owns a major collection of East Asian fabrics and costumes.

Villa Montalvo filmmakers talk at Foothill Club
The Saratoga Foothill Club welcomes Valerie Archer and John Wainwright to speak at the fourth program of its 2000-2001 Public Lecture Series on Feb. 27, at 10 a.m. The filmmakers will discuss their documentary of U.S. Sen. James Phelan and Villa Montalvo, and explain how their film came to be made. They will also premiere various segments of the film.
The program takes place at the Saratoga Foothill Club clubhouse, at 20399 Park Place. Admission is a $6 donation. Call 408.354.2527 or 408.867.2361.
Exotic Myanmar is topic of talk by a world traveler
As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga has invited Philip Hassrick of Lost Frontiers to give a slide presentation on Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. Hassrick will introduce his audience to the visual feast that is Myanmar--formerly known as Burma. He will show and tell of the country's history, culture, Buddhist monasteries, remote tribal villages, emerald-green rice paddies, golden pagodas and bustling markets. He also will tell about journeying down the Irawaddy River, also known as Kipling's road to Mandalay.
