Chinese groups join in food collection
Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties will receive donations of food and money from the local Chinese community as part of New Year's festivities planned by a group of Chinese organizations.
The Silicon Valley Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans, the Association of Northern California Chinese Schools and the Taiwanese-American Chamber of Commerce--Northern California are the sponsors of the 1996 Chinese New Year Food Drive.
The drive will end on Feb. 28. Donations of checks and nonperishable food items can be dropped off at Ocean Harbor, 370 S. Winchester Blvd., San Jose. For more information, call 243-3366.
Arnolds' photographs showing in Los Gatos
Landscape and architectural photographs by Suzanne and Jim Arnold of Saratoga are on display at the Tait Gallery at the Museum of Fine Art through March 18.
Photos of San Francisco, Yosemite, Charleston, S.C., Savannah, Ga., Key West, Fla., England, Scotland and Wales are included. The Arnolds have been displaying their works at fine arts shows and festivals for more than six years. Both are active in the arts community, including the Los Gatos Art Association and Saratoga Contemporary Artists, of which Suzanne is president.
The Museum of Fine Art, located at the intersection of Main Street and Tait Avenue, is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
Hike the fault at Sanborn Park
The San Andreas Fault runs through Saratoga's back yard. To help people learn more about earthquakes, the Youth Science Institute will lead a hike through Sanborn-Skyline County Park along the fault on Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The easy hike will include earthquake safety information and activities for all ages. Cost is $10 for adults, $8 for children 12 and under. To register, call 356-4945.
Chinese New Year dinner coming up
The American Association of University Women, Los Gatos- Saratoga branch, will hold its sixth annual Chinese New Year gourmet dinner, with Chinese food and entertainment, Feb. 28 at Chef Chau's restaurant in Saratoga. The event helps fund a scholarship for a graduating re-entry woman at West Valley College who is majoring in math or science and transferring to a college or university. The public is invited.
Cost is $25, and reservations must be made by Feb. 24. For information and reservations, call 867-1410.
Montalvo hosts birthday party
Celebrate George Washington's Birthday on Feb. 22 at Villa Montalvo with the Montalvo Service Group. Festivities will begin at noon, and will feature card-playing, lunch, a fashion show and prizes.
Parking will be on the Villa Montalvo grounds at 15400 Montalvo Road in Saratoga. Proceeds will support Montalvo's programs for the arts. For reservations or further information, contact Helen Brazil at 257-4128 before Feb. 15.
Grand View League elects its first officers
The Grand View League, a group of 100 women from throughout the county who will put on an annual Cattle Baron's Ball to raise money for the American Cancer Society, was officially launched in January with the election of officers.
The first officers are President Brookes Brown of Saratoga; Vice President Andrea Thomas of Monte Sereno; secretary Tina Pidwell of Saratoga, and treasurers Jan Blakeslee of Campbell and Sherrill Kenny of Saratoga. Roxanne Peterschmidt of Saratoga and Carla Norred of San Jose are co-chairs of this year's Cattle Baron's Ball.
The ball, modeled after a similar event in Houston, will be held Sept. 28 at the Hayes Mansion in San Jose. Inspiration for the league came from last year's Grandview Gala fundraiser, held at the estate of Dr. W. Donald Head in Saratoga.
