No one scored in double figures for the Saratoga boys' basketball team when the Falcons took on Homestead last week. But 'Toga boss Mike Davey didn't care.
In fact, Davey was pleased to see 10 different players score in a balanced attack that led the Falcons to a 58-34 victory over the Mustangs.
It's not that certain Falcons can't put up double digit numbers. They proved they could just two days later when Aaron Martlage and Bryan Webster each scored in twin figures in a 49-44 win over Mountain View.
The different scoring attacks led the Falcons to back-to-back wins in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and helped Saratoga jump to 8-3 in the division and to 16-8 for the season.
The Falcons close out the division season on Feb. 14 when they host Fremont at 7 p.m.
Martlage fired in eight points and Webster added seven to top a list of 10 Falcons who scored in the win over Homestead to open play last week.
Andy Uppal, Brennan Carroll, Dave Goni and Mike Black had six points each in the win for Saratoga. Tom Calderon added five points, Eddie Jeng hit four, Mark Marshall had three and Tony Hsu popped two. Uppal hit a pair of three-pointers and Calderon had one.
The Falcons led just 13-3 at the half against the Mustangs, but scored 20 points in each of the last two periods to cruise to the easy win.
The win was much tougher to come by later in the week against Mountain View. The Falcons trailed 25-19 at intermission, but outscored the Spartans 12-4 in the third and 18-15 in the fourth to clinch the five-point victory.
Martlage led the Falcons with 18 points and Webster had a three among his 11 points. Black drilled eight points, including a three, and Calderon had seven, Jeng three and Carroll two.
Westmont, Prospect first
Both the Westmont and Prospect boys' basketball teams are leading their respective divisions in the Blossom Valley Athletic League this winter.
The Warriors won twice last week to improve to 9-1 in the Santa Teresa Division, and the Panthers split, but still top the pack in the West Valley Division with an 8-2 mark.
David Newberg had a big week for Westmont, pumping in 48 points to lead the Warriors to back-to-back wins.
Newberg poured in 30 points to pace Westmont to a 54-38 win over Piedmont Hills. Hoon Chung chipped in with eight points, Rob Lambourne had six, Matt Tait five, Lee Reyes three and Nate Tomforde two.
Newberg came back with 18 points to drive the Warriors to a 51-40 win over Del Mar a couple of days later. Chung finished with nine, Reyes and Lambourne hit five apiece, Tait and Andy Brown added four each, and Zach Felder, Ernesto Bautista and Jeremy Spence hit two each. Reyes had a three-pointer.
Westmont is now 20-2 for the year.
Prospect opened the week with an important 69-50 win over Willow Glen that all but wrapped up the division championship for the Panthers.
Junior guard Aaron Harmon led the Panthers with 23 points, including a three-pointer, and A.J. Forney chipped in with 15. Eli Cates added 14, Uriah Bojorquez had 10 and Spencer Melville popped seven. Bojorquez hit a three.
Prospect lost a 60-59 heartbreaker to Silver Creek to close out the week. Harmon hit a couple of threes and finished with 21 points, and Bojorquez buried three threes on his way to 11 points. Forney tossed in 12 points, Cates had 11 and Melville canned four.
Warriors get even
The Westmont girls pulled even in the Santa Teresa Division with wins over Leigh and Piedmont Hills. The Warriors are now 6-6 in division play and 11-9 for the year.
The Warriors battled from behind to pull out a thrilling 30-28 win over Leigh to open the week.
Westmont led 9-8 at the first buzzer, but trailed by three at the half and by two after three periods. The Warriors topped Leigh 12-8 in the final period to pull out the two-point victory.
Lyneé Velasco led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points for the Warriors. Melissa Newberg added eight points, including a three-pointer, and Tiffany Reiblein had six points. Lauren Costanzo popped four points and Mandy Williams added two.
Velasco came back with 15 points to lead the Warriors to a 56-43 win over Piedmont Hills. Costanzo and Melissa Taylor came through with eight points apiece and Stephanie Herrera added six.
Reiblein chipped in with five points, Newberg had four, Courtney Makishima and Williams hit three apiece, and Emillia Ortiz and Lindsay Hahn pitched in two each.
The Warriors opened up a seven-point lead in the first period, held it at the half and stretched it to 12 heading into the fourth.
Tough loss for Panthers
The Prospect girls dropped a tough 38-35 nod to Presentation in a key battle in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL.
The Panthers slipped to 7-3 in the division with the loss and they're 19-3 for the year. Presentation improved to 7-2 in the division, and won later in the week to jump to 8-2. Mitty tops the circuit at 11-0.
Ami Forney led all Prospect scorers with 14 points against Presentation. Shelley Kurose bombed a couple of threes and finished with seven points.
Theresa Nguyen added six points, Megan Sainsbury hit four and Kristie Carlquist and Lyndsey Najima had two apiece.
The Panthers led 12-8 after a period but were stymied 15-3 in the second to fall back by eight at the half, 23-15. Prospect cut the lead by three in the third and by two more in the fourth, but the Panthers came up three short.
Falcons lose a pair
The Saratoga girls lost a pair of games in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, falling 31-21 to Mountain View and losing a 43-42 heartbreaker to Palo Alto.
Sarah Ruby jammed 12 points and Kristin Zisko supported with 11, but the Falcons came up a point short. Erica Miyamoto added nine points for the Falcons, and Amy Leu, Andrea Lo and Audrey Lo had two each.
The Vikings jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the first period, but the Falcons battled back in the second quarter and led by one at the half, 21-20. Saratoga stretched its lead to five in the third period, but Palo Alto battled back to outscore the Falcons 11-5 in the fourth to pull out the win.
Miyamoto had six points and Rudy and Jill Moon hit four apiece in a low-scoring 31-21 loss to Mountain View to finish the week. Zisko had three points and Leu and Kristen Bencala added two apiece in the loss.
The Falcons, now 1-11 in division play, were outscored 8-1 in the first period, but topped Mountain View 12-2 in the second to lead 13-10 at the half. But Saratoga could score just eight points in the second half.
Lynbrook girls split
Hilary Parker is a returning all-leaguer for the Homestead girls' basketball team this season.
Yeah? Well, that's no big news for the girls' basketball team at Lynbrook.
The Vikings got a first-hand look at Parker's all-league talents last week when she pumped in 22 points to drive the Mustangs past Lynbrook 64-51 in De Anza Division play.
Lynbrook, now 3-7 in the division and 8-13 for the year, had opened the week with a tight 35-34 win over Gunn.
