Eugene W. O'Rorke
Eugene William "Gene" O'Rorke, 76, died Feb. 5. He was a Saratoga resident and a former general manager for General Electric Corp.
Born in Harrison, N.Y., he graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in mathematics and chemistry and eventually worked as a chemical engineer for the Manhattan Project.
He was active in community affairs, serving on the Saratoga Planning Commission and the Saratoga Public Safety Commission. Karin Dowdy, who served on the Public Safety Commission with him, said he was instrumental in putting together the city's emergency preparedness plan. "He just always gave to the community," she said.
O'Rorke was also a golfer, gardener and ham radio operator.
O'Rorke was preceded in death by a son, Owen, in 1993.He is survived by his wife, Virginia O'Rorke of Saratoga; four children, Patrick O'Rorke of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Timothy O'Rorke of Saratoga, Juliette O'Rorke Uebner of Cathy's Valley, Calif., Ellen O'Rorke Calcaterra of Los Angeles; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial mass was held Feb. 9 at Sacred Heart Church in Saratoga.
Charles Moran
Charles Moran, 63, died Feb. 4 at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.
Born in Los Angeles and a resident of Saratoga, he taught business law at West Valley College for 30 years. He earned a degree in law from Golden Gate University and a master's degree in economics from Santa Clara University.
His hobbies included fishing, camping, opera and reading.
He is survived by his wife, Chris Carney of Saratoga; his mother, Dorothy Moran of Fullerton; three children, Susan Moran of New York, Michael Moran of Santa Cruz, Mary Ann Moran of San Francisco; and two siblings, Doris Kiby of Fullerton and Patricia Robinson of San Diego.
Memorial services were held Feb. 9 at the Alameda Family's Saratoga-Cupertino Funeral Home.
