Fire station bond named Measure F

Saratogans can vote on Measure F (as in fire), a $6 million bond to finance construction of a new fire station at the corner of Saratoga Avenue and Highway 9, at a special election April 11.

Fire Commissioner Jay Geddes said at the City Council meeting Feb. 8 that the Saratoga Fire District is "laying low" in terms of campaigning for the bond until after the March vote on Measure N, which would fund a renovation of the Saratoga Community Library.

Geddes also reported that the study of fire and medical services that the SFD is funding is under way. The consulting firm, DMG Maximus, began their study Feb. 9.

SFD Commissioner Bob Egan, Fire Chief Ernie Kraule and Captain Bill Morrison, who is the Union President, will address the Good Government Group concerning the new station. The meeting, on Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at St. Raymond's Hall at Our Lady of Fatima, is open to the public.

    City changes animal services contract

The City Council authorized an amendment to the city's contract with the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley Feb. 2, extending the date when the society will stop providing animal services to Saratoga from July 1, 2000, to June 30, 2001. This one year extension to the city's contract was part of a compliance plan the Council approved in November to comply with a state bill that lengthens the amount of time animals can stay in shelters before being put to sleep. This bill will go into effect July 2000.

The additional time will allow Saratoga to enter into a joint powers agreement with other West Valley and South Bay area cities for field services, including sheltering, licensing and picking up stray injured or dead animals from the street.
