Sierra Club plans a free program on wildland fires

The local Guadalupe Regional Group of the Sierra Club hosts a slide-narrated program on wildland fires on Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave.

Speaker Mike Morales, a six-year firefighter with the California Department of Forestry(CDF), fought grass, brush and timber fires in the Morgan Hill area as well as in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He later worked for Lockheed at a test base in the same mountains and began photographing fires he saw while commuting. He used this material to present wildfire programs to more than 1,500 people by 1970 through Volunteers in Fire Prevention, a joint program between the CDF and Lockheed.

Everyone is welcome to attend the program. Those attending are encouraged to bring their own cups to conserve natural resources.

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Camera Club holds its monthly program meeting on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Youth Center of the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos, 16575 Shannon Road. This month's guest is Chuck Tribolet, who will show slides taken from 400 dives around the world. Admission is free. Prospective members and anyone interested in photography are welcome to attend. Call 408.266.0250.

Environmental law expert talks at Foothill Club

For the fourth installment of its 1999-2000 Public Lecture Series, the Saratoga Foothill Club welcomes attorney Michelle Leighton on Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. for a presentation titled "U.S. Multinationals in the New Millennium: Enhancing Their Social and Environmental Performances."

Leighton is an international environment law and human rights specialist at Stanford University. In her presentation, she will discuss research and the latest findings on how and why multinationals are using voluntary codes of conduct and what this means.

The program takes place at the Saratoga Foothill Club clubhouse, 20399 Park Place. A donation of $6 is appreciated. For more information, call 408.867.2361 or 408.354.2527.
