Oka leads Warriors to third
By Dick Sparrer
Neither Independence nor Westmont figured among the leaders in the wrestling race in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this season.
That's the dual match wrestling race.
Because when it came time for the BVAL finals last Saturday, the 76ers and Warriors proved to be very much among the leaders.
Independence and Westmont were both sub-.500 dual match teams in the tough Mt. Hamilton Division. In fact, Westmont finished at 2-3-1 and Independence at 1-4-1 after the two tied 39-39 last week in the final dual of the regular season.
But both have proven to be tough tournament squads. And they certainly were at the league finals.
Overfelt backed up its Mt. Hamilton dual match championship with a victory in the league meet. But right behind were Independence and Westmont.
The Royals finished first overall with 181 points. Independence was second at 167, with Westmont third at 158 and Oak Grove fourth at 140.
Tony Oka topped a list of five Westmont wrestlers to reach the championship round at the BVAL finals. Oka won a title at 173 pounds, with seconds going to Juan Jimenez at 114, Dat Dinh at 121, Adam Antolin at 127 and Garreth Gorman at 147.
Billy Stouffer nailed a third-place finish at 154 pounds for the Warriors, with John Baumann fourth at 105 and Jose Blanco fourth at 162.
Del Mar put two wrestlers in the finals, and both of the Dons nailed individual titles.
Cody Wilkinson was a champion at 132 for Del Mar, and David Galant won the crown at 191. Liem Truong supported with a third-place finish at 105 pounds for the Dons.
Westmont finished just nine points behind the Sixers at the league finals after tying Independence 39-39 in dual match action last week.
Jimenez, Antolin and Stouffer each pinned to lead the Westmont effort against the Sixers. Antolin pinned with 20 seconds left in the first round at 127 pounds, and Stouffer pinned with just 10 seconds remaining in the first round at 154. Jimenez nailed a second-round fall at 114.
Blanco won by injury default at 162 pounds, and Gorman was 7-5 decision winner at 147.
