AT&T REMEMBERED: Louise Webb and Marilyn Bower were two who caught the AT&T golf tournament Feb. 4, and in addition to spotting celebrities, spied Ed Porter, who was on transportation duty, ushering folks into shuttle buses to move from one course to another.
Porter was one of the 1,600 volunteers who served at the famed tourney and reported the volunteers were treated royally with a sumptuous dinner and entertainment from the likes of Glen Campbell and Michael Bolton with Clint Eastwood and his wife as emcees.
Webb and Bower followed Tiger Woods and Kevin Costner and watched Bill Murray's antics as he rolled a ball on the green as though it were a bowling ball. He also snared and donned one lady spectator's collar during the match.
Webb reminds that this is Random Acts of Kindness Week, nationally, as well as in Saratoga. She and Betsy Corry made it an official week several years ago. She reports that some acts she's spotted include handmade gifts for Claire Jerbic from her colleagues in the autobiography and painting classes she takes at the senior center.
Jerbic broke her hip in a fall during the holidays and is now home mending. The art class has an exhibit at the center and some of the paintings are selling.
CHINESE NEW YEAR: When her quince bush begins to blossom, it's probably time for Chinese New Year. At least that's the timetable piano-lesson school owner Kerstin Stone employs. Some celebrants stopped by recently to ask if they could snip off a few branches to use as decoration for their festivities.
They may have even been AAUW members because that group will host a CNY Gourmet dinner at Hong's Restaurant, Fourth and Big Basin Way, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for a scholarship to be awarded to a re-entry woman majoring in math and science at West Valley College.
Rose Marie Twu, president of the Sunnyvale-Cupertino League of Women Voters will talk about the restoration of the Golden Dragon of the Heart's Delight at Kelly Park in San Jose. The dragon, 125 feet long, is the symbol of New Year. Twu is a former chairwoman of the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project. For tickets, call 354-2944.
ENGLISH IMPORT: Lynn Seymour is the sister of Bruce Springbett, a local dentist. Seymour was imported from England to serve as a consultant for the San Francisco Ballet this season because Kenneth MacMillan's "The Invitation" is on the bill and Seymour was the one who originally starred in it.
It's a shocking and controversial piece because a rape is part of the ballet. Seymour's dramatic intensity made her the most electrifying ballerina of her day. "Terrifying" is the way one critic described her performances. The part of Juliet should have gone to Seymour [rather than to Margot Fonteyn], according to local dance guru Betty McClendon.
Bruce Springbett is justly famed as a runner in these parts. And, according to McClendon, he moves with the grace of his sister, the world-class ballerina. "Must be in the genes," she mutters.
RECORD RESPONSE: The Summit League reports it raised $122,000, the most money ever, from its holiday fundraiser Homes for the Holiday. The money will go to the San Jose Family Shelter at 1590 Las Plumas Ave., San Jose.
The shelter can house two-parent or single-parent families and their children, one of only two in the county roomy enough. The league presents H for H every other year, in addition to smaller fundraisers through the year. The group comprises 45 members from Saratoga, Los Gatos and Monte Sereno.
Co-chairs of the event were Elaine Knoernschild and Caryl Armstrong. The two presented the check to Auther Charette and Margaret Gregg, representing the shelter. Eleanor Whalen is president of Summit League.
NO BOOK MONTALVO BOOK FAIR: Book devotees and antiquarians will be sorry to learn that the Montalvo Book Fair scheduled for March 20 has been canceled for this year. The reason given was scheduling conflicts with other book fairs.
TO THE GETTY & VAN GOGH: On the other hand, the Recreation Department-sponsored trip to the Getty in February produced so many on the wait list (50) that another trip has been scheduled. This one will be May 6 and 7 and take in the new Getty Museum and the Van Gogh exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which proved to be so popular its run was extended.
A class on Van Gogh given by Magda Madriz, a San Jose arts commissioner, will be given by the Saratoga Recreation Department. More information: 868-1248 or 1249.
A PLETHORA OF HELENS: There are so many Helens living at the Meadows--13--that they even formed a Helen Club that meets monthly for dinner. The waiter has no trouble personalizing the service at that table. And a name powerful enough to launch a thousand ships ought to easily get a few gravy boats going.
