Reporters apparently do not excel at math

Your Feb. 4 issue [of the Saratoga News] contains an item that I imagine many of your readers found strange. Under the heading "Redwood students excel in math test," you prove that your reporters do not. You report that 36 percent of 18 students scored "high honors" in some Golden State math exam.

Now, there is no whole number that gives 36 percent of 18. Six students would be 33 percent and seven would be 39 percent.

One wonders, then, about this half-student who scored "high honors" or this student that scored "half high honors."

Whatever happened to proofreading?
