Former mayors caught on film

The Saratoga City Council is honoring former Saratoga mayors with the unveiling of portraits of mayors who served from 1983 to 1997. Saratoga residents are invited to attend a reception on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the city manager's office lobby at City Hall, located at 13777 Fruitvale Ave., for the official unveiling.

Those interested in attending the event can RSVP by calling 868-1227. For information, call Jennie Loft at 868-1218.

Turning an eye toward science

Saratoga residents are being encouraged to get scientific with local students during Science and Engineering Fair Week in March. Saratoga Mayor Don Wolfe and councilmembers declared the week of March 22-28 to be Science and Engineering Fair Week at the council's Feb. 4 meeting.

The week will coincide with local schools' science and engineering fairs, scheduled for March 24 and 25 throughout Saratoga and Los Gatos. The fairs are designed to stimulate students' interest in all aspects of science and to direct public attention toward science.

Saratoga needs volunteers for variety of duties

The city of Saratoga is looking for residents interested in volunteering to record the minutes at city commission meetings or become day and nature camp and Kinder Club assistants.

Those volunteering to take minutes would work one evening a month. Excellent written communication and word-processing skills are required.

Day and nature camp assistants would work for two or more weeks in mornings or afternoons from mid-June to mid-August, Mondays through Fridays. They would assist staff members with programs ranging from theme-related activities to singing, creative drama and storytelling. Training sessions are available.

The city's Kinder Club instructor needs assistants to help set up activities and with preschool children. The focus of the club is on ideas and activities that nurture the creative and social growth of children. Help is needed on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Call Lori Burns at the city's volunteer office at 868-1252.
