The time has come for Westmont's girls

By Dick Sparrer

For the girls at Westmont, it's just a matter of time.

And their time should come this week when they wrap up the regular season in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Warriors need just one win in their last week games to clinch the division championship. They enter the week with an 11-1 division record compared to the 9-3 mark of second-place Independence.

Westmont will host Willow Glen on Feb. 18, 5 p.m., and will visit Del Mar on Feb. 20, 7 p.m. A win in either game will give the Warriors the league title.

The Warriors put themselves in position to win the title this week by pounded Gunderson and Mt. Pleasant last week.

Sheryl Mahaffey poured in 20 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Warriors to the 48-31 win over Gunderson to open the week.

Lauren Costanzo, Lindsay Hahn and Alyssa Parson supported with five points each, Melissa Taylor and Melissa Newberg had four apiece, Emillia Oritz hit three and Tiffany Reiblein added two.

Westmont trailed by a bucket at intermission, but outscored Gunderson 17-5 in the third and 15-8 in the fourth to nail the victory.

Westmont is 20-2 overall this year.

Zisko stars

Saratoga's Allison Zisko poured in 21 points to lead the Falcons to a 47-37 win over Wilcox in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The win helped Saratoga improve to 7-5 in the division and to 13-8 for the year.

Sarah Rudy joined Zisko in double digits for the Falcons with 11 points. Jennifer Chan added eight points for Saratoga and Nancy Fathali hit seven.

The win left the Falcons with a split for the week. Saratoga was coming off of a tough 64-51 loss to first-place Santa Clara.

Rudy led the Falcons with 17 points in that one, and Zisko chipped in with 13. Fathali and Clancy Roberts hit nine points apiece, Robyn Katzman had two and Andrea Lo hit one.

Prospect falls

The Prospect girls lost two straight in the tough Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL last week. The Panthers fell 60-32 to first-place Mitty and 46-42 to Leland.

Lyndsey Najima tossed in 14 points, including a pair of three-pointers, and Heather Winkleman added 13, including a three, but it wasn't enough for the Panthers against the Chargers.

Elizabeth Harkins chipped in with eight points, Erica Slykhouse hit four, Adela Sojtaric two and Jennifer Sitter one.

Prospect, 2-8 in the division and 9-13 for the year, opened the week by losing to Mitty. Harkins led the Panthers with 11 points, Najima had seven, Winkleman five, Sojtaric four, Sitter three, and Edina Blazevic and Cindy Sharpe one each.

Carroll leads Falcons

Brennan Carroll poured in 20 points to lead Saratoga to a 51-47 win over Monta Vista, but the Falcons could manage just a split in a pair of El Camino Division games last week.

The Falcons dropped a 64-41 nod to Wilcox to finish the week. The loss left Saratoga 4-6 in league play and 6-16 for the year.

But Saratoga got off to a good start on the week when Carroll led the Falcons past the Matadors.

Tom Calderon joined Carroll in double figures with 11 points and Luke Weger hit a three-pointer on his way to nine points. Cory Schwaderer supported with five points and Tony Hsu, Michael Black and Jeremy Devich hit two each.

Carroll and Black came back with nine points apiece, but the Falcons lost the 64-41 decision to Wilcox to cap the week. Calderon and Weger supported with five points apiece.

Warriors split

David Kim hit a couple of three-pointers on his way to 12 points to lead the Westmont boys to a 51-43 win over Pioneer in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL last week.

Zach Felder and Nick Boldrey supported with 10 points apiece in the win. Tom Hahn added six points, Mike Shin hit five and Nate Thomforde and Neil Cripe had four each.

But Westmont lost 56-39 to Mt. Pleasant later to slip to 4-6 in division play and to 10-13 for the year.

Kim led the Warriors with nine points and Hahn had eight. Boldrey and Chin hit six points each, Felder and Cripe added four apiece, and Herb Hudec popped two.
