Saratogan teaches a class on sumi-e

As part of the many classes and programs it offers on arts and culture, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens presents "Sumi-e: Japanese Ink & Brush Painting" March 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 10 a.m. to noon each day. The instructor is Saratoga resident Mariko Suzuki, who graduated art school in Tokyo, Japan, and has rigorously studied the classical art of sumi-e. Suzuki will demonstrate various painting and matting techniques. Practice paper can also be purchased.

The cost is $20 per class. To register for one or more classes, call Suzuki at 408.867.8610 or email her at sumifudemariko@hotmail.com.

    Congregation plans an event

Congregation Beth David, at 19700 Prospect Road in Saratoga, invites the community to attend its Passover Preparation Faire on March 17 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event is part of a three-year mentoring program funded by the Koret Foundation of San Francisco. The program's goal is to give people opportunities to learn about Jewish customs and beliefs in an experiential, hands-on way.

Congregants will provide resources, information and guidance on preparing the home for the Passover holiday, shopping and cooking and different ways of observance. Short presentations will take place, and take-home educational materials will be available, as will children's activities. The Faire is free for both Beth David members and the general public. For more information, call 408.366.9107 or email evym@beth-david.org.
