Falcons fall in final basketball games

    By Dick Sparrer

The basketball season came to a rather uneventful end for the boys and girls teams at Saratoga High School.

The Falcons lost 40-21 to Santa Clara in boys basketball action last week, and the girls, after opening the week with a 41-28 win over Cupertino, finished the year with a 50-41 loss to Monta Vista.

The split left the 'Toga girls 3-11 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Senior Dernie Wang finished her high school career with a solid effort, but her 14 points weren't enough to lead the Falcons to a win over the Matadors on Friday night.

Wang dropped four shots from the field and added six points at the free-throw line to finish with 14 points to lead all Saratoga scorers against the Mats. Senior forward Rebecca Yang joined Wang in double figures with 10 points.

Lynn Chouw had a three-pointer among her five points and Tannaz Altafi and Melody Lee added four points apiece. Tiffany Tan and Diana Shih had two points each.

The Falcons trailed Monta Vista by just a bucket after a period, and it remained that way until the fourth with Saratoga matching the Matadors' eight points in the second quarter and 10 points in the third. But Monta Vista unloaded 19-12 in the final period to clinch the win.

Earlier in the week, Tan poured in 10 points to lead the Falcons to a 41-28 win over Cupertino. Wang, Altafi and Karen Woo supported with six points each in the Saratoga victory. Woo popped a pair of threes.

Yang tossed in four points, Lee had three and Sarah Yee, Szu-Han Wang and Aubrey Weger added two each.

The Falcons jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the first period and upped that to a 16-point lead by intermission, 27-9, on the road to the victory.

Saratoga ended up 6-17 for the year. Seniors playing their last game for the Falcons included Chouw, Courtney Miyamoto, D. Wang, Lee, S. Wang, Tina Hsu, Yang and Altafi.

The Saratoga boys also ended the season on a losing note, falling 40-21 to Santa Clara.

It was a tough night for the Falcons, who couldn't score more than six points in a period. In fact, Saratoga scored six three times before being held to just three points in the final quarter.

Santa Clara jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the first period and led 20-12 at the half. After the clubs matched six points in the third, the Bruins took the game away by topping the Falcons 14-3 in the fourth.

Senior Daniel Ruby led the Falcons with just six points in the game. Alexi Sevastapoulus and Chris Barrett hit four points each, Mark Elving had three and Justin Zebb and Matt Ashburn added two each. Sevastapoulus hit a three-pointer.

Playing their final high school game for Saratoga were seniors Sevastapoulus, Ruby, Jesse Alejandro and Mike Mann.

Zebb, Elving and Alan Tsai top a list of talented juniors who will head up the cast of returners for the Falcons next winter.
