Residents urged not to use fireplaces
The West Valley Clean Water Program, which serves Los Gatos, Saratoga, Monte Sereno and Campbell and is based in Monte Sereno, has asked West Valley residents to use heating alternatives, other than fireplaces and wood burning stoves, this winter. According to Sheila Tucker, program manager, wood burning produces dioxins, which pollute the air and threaten local creeks and the bay. Cleaner burning alternatives are gas inserts or pellet stoves, she said.
The request follows on the heels of the National Toxicology Program's announcement that added dioxin to a list of substances known to be human carcinogens.
According to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, wood smoke is a significant source of dioxin air emissions in the Bay Area. For more information, call 408.354.5385.
Commission puts off talk on Big Basin development
Saratoga Planning Commissioners and developer Stan Gamble recently discussed a proposal for a mixed commercial and residential proposal for Big Basin Way during a study session.
Gamble informally brought up a plan during the Feb. 14 meeting with one less residence and more commercial space than the original plan he presented on Jan. 24. When the commission first heard the proposal on Jan. 24, some commissioners expressed concern that the plan called for too many residential units and did not provide enough commercial space. The plan will come back before the commission on March 14.
