Eclectic performer provides an evening's entertainment

    By Shari Kaplan

David Roth, who travels around the country sharing his singing, songwriting and storytelling talents, is making a local stop on March 1, at 7:30 p.m., when he appears in the Performing Arts Center of Christa McAuliffe School, 12211 Titus Ave. in Saratoga.

Dubbed "The Seinfeld of Song" by Dr. Joel Goodman, director of the Humor Project in New York, the Chicago native has opened for Dr. Maya Angelou at the Healing the Whole Self conference and has performed at the anniversaries of the United Nations and Carnegie Hall. His style is contemporary acoustic music that is original, occasionally hilarious and always thought-provoking. He's also cut six albums and has created his own one-man show, The Gripes of Roth, which premiered on stage in 1994, in Boulder, Colo.

"David's music will touch you to the very depths of your soul, make you laugh and cry, inspire you to rise and fly," says Jack Canfield, co-author of the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books. Roth has, in fact, had one of his own stories appear in A 3rd Serving of Chicken Soup for the Soul. He has also contributed to many other publications, including Care Packages for the Workplace by Barbara Glanz.

Roth performs at music festivals, clubs and special events throughout the United States and Canada. He also performs and leads workshops for a variety of organizations and groups, including the Council on Child Abuse and Neglect in South Carolina, the Association for Creative Change in Maryland and the Humor Project in New York. For several years, he has been the artist-in-residence at New York's Omega Institute, an adult education center.

The Saratoga event is an evening of music and stories intended for kids-at-heart, but not children. Folding chairs are available for seating, but those attending are welcome to bring their own low chairs, pillows or blankets, and get comfortable on the floor. A suggested donation of $10 will be accepted at the door.

For directions to the school, call 408.253.4696. For more information about Roth, visit his website at www.folkera.com/windriver/davidroth/index.html.
