'Woman's Voice' joins local media

By Sue Fagalde Lick

A new newspaper called The Woman's Voice has begun to show up at local businesses. Published by Shannon Haley of Saratoga, the bimonthly tabloid is about to publish its third edition.

"The Woman's Voice is a forum for everyone to speak out," says Haley, who worked in advertising for years before deciding to start her own newspaper. She operates as a one-woman shop, selling advertising, coordinating stories and overseeing distribution of the finished newspaper.

"It started with a wild idea," says Haley, who sees the newspaper as a place for women to have their say and a way for families to improve communication. Many of the articles are written by experts in counseling, finance, health and other areas.

"The actual format of the paper is different from any I've ever seen," she says.

In the process of getting started, Haley said she has met with both strong support and with people who question her motives in founding a "woman's" newspaper. The emphasis is really on family issues, Haley insists, noting that since she started inviting people to write columns for the paper, "I can't keep up with the mail I'm getting."

The paper is currently available at 135 distribution points throughout Santa Clara County, including doctor's offices, restaurants, hair salons and exercise studios.
