Falcons, Vikings share division championship
By Dick Sparrer
There were a couple of things that had to happen last week for the Saratoga boys basketball team to win a share of the championship in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
First of all, the Falcons had to beat Lynbrook. Then they had to finish out the season with a win over Mountain View.
Now, Mountain View wasn't a real concern for head coach Mike Davey and his Falcons. They had beaten the Spartans before by plenty, and so had just about everyone else in the division for that matter--Mountain View had just two wins in league play.
But Lynbrook? That was another story.
The Vikings had beaten Saratoga the first time the two clubs met in league play, and Lynbrook was riding high atop the El Camino pack.
But the Falcons took care of that last Wednesday night. Saratoga edged Lynbrook 45-39 to create a first-place tie in the division standings.
Lynbrook went on to crush last place Cupertino 61-27 later in the week, but Saratoga came through with an equally convincing 65-39 win over Mountain View.
The two wins for Saratoga, combined with the split for Lynbrook, left the two clubs with matching 10-2 records and a co-championship in the El Camino Division.
Micah Weger lit things up for 20 points to lead the Falcons to the important win over Lynbrook last week. Three of Weger's six field goals were from three-point range, and he added five points at the free-throw line.
Mike Crosby drilled a pair of threes to finish with six points, and A.J. Peper had six points and Scott Snider hit five.
B.K. Robertson topped the Vikings with 15 points and Scott Stevens had nine, including a three. Brandon Davis added six points, and Justin Fujihara had a three among his five points.
The Falcons wrapped up the regular season 24-3 with the win over Mountain View later in the week. Weger had 21 points, including a three, and Peper joined him in double digits with 15. Bill Wallace and Steven Ruby had six points apiece, and Crosby and Tony Kau added four each.
Lynbrook finished regular season play at 18-8 with the win over Cupertino. Robertson led the Vikings with 16 points, Ray Supan had 14 and Stevens hit 13, including three three-pointers.
Westmont wins
The Westmont boys won their final league game to wind up third overall in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The Warriors topped San Jose 54-47 to wrap up the league season 9-3.
Daniel Sherburne led all Westmont scorers with 16 points against the Bulldogs. Big 6-foot-4 Caleb Pitts tossed in 13 points and Vincent Chung hit three threes on his way to 11 points. Erik Cisler added nine points and Clay Tolbert had five, including a three.
Panthers split
Zak Diriya tossed in 32 points in two games, but the Prospect boys could manage just a split in their final two games of the regular season in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.
Diriya pumped in 19 points, including three three-pointers, to lead the Panthers to a 54-44 win over Silver Creek last Friday night.
Slaven Moro and Chad Holan pitched in 10 points apiece for the winners, and Ryan Sainsbury had a three among his six points. Arnel Karabegovic hit a three-pointer, Mike Stephens and John Minor had two points each and Mike Senteio hit one.
The Panthers, 5-7 in the division and 14-12 for the year, had fallen 51-50 to Valley Christian to open the week. The Panthers fought back from a 43-32 deficit after three periods to outscore the Warriors 18-8 in the fourth period, only to come up a point short.
Diriya led the Panthers with 13 points, and Moro and Minor canned 10 apiece. Holan added eight points, Sainsbury six and Senteio three. Diriya and Sainsbury each hit a three-pointer.
