Hearing set on city's building moratorium

There will be a public hearing on a possible building moratorium in Saratoga at the City Council's March 1 meeting at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in council chambers, 13777 Fruitvale Ave.

The council is considering an interim ordinance, which would prohibit--for up to two years--approval of noncommercial developments on lands that are designated commercial in the city's General Plan. The moratorium would supposedly give the City Council time to study whether an extension of Measure G to commercial areas would be a good idea for Saratoga.

All interested citizens will be heard at the hearing.

City newsletter to come out in March

The City Council has reviewed all the articles to appear in the city's newsletter before the first issue is mailed out. The premiere issue will include items on the library bond measure, commission vacancies, the sewage disposal ordinance, capital improvements and updates on the city's General Plan. The newsletter will also contain features such as a Council message, helpful phone numbers, the city's website address and a community event calendar.

The target date for printing was Feb. 15. The newsletter could be ready to be mailed out to residents Feb. 25.

The newsletter does not yet have a name, but residents are invited to submit suggestions to the city.

Hyde House named a historic landmark

The City Council voted to designate a home at 11995 Walbrook Drive a historic landmark. The Heritage Preservation Commission determined that the property, known as the Hyde House, meets all the criteria for designation, and voted to recommend the property to the Council.

The Hyde House, which is a craftsman bungalow style home, was placed on the city's Historic Resources Inventory in 1988. The Hyde family was prominent in Saratoga's history as owners of fruit and nut orchards. The family went on to own the Sunsweet Growers Association, a cannery and dehydrating plant in Campbell.
