    Racing the Rain

The wind was howling and the rain was threatening when some 2,500 gathered Feb. 20 at Big Basin Way and Third Street in Saratoga for the start of the annual Great Race. The four-mile course ended at N. Santa Cruz and Bean avenues in Los Gatos. This was the 23rd year of the race. The sponsor is the Los Gatos Rotary Club. Results will appear soon in our Sports section.

    Stormy Weather

This large California bay laurel tree near the entrance to Hakone Gardens crashed to the ground during stormy weather on Feb. 12 and blocked traffic for nearly seven hours on Highway 9. The tree barely missed a motorist whose pickup truck skidded and hit the tree, according to Capt. James Young of the Saratoga Fire District, who responded to the call. The two people in the car suffered minor injuries, Young said. The tree was between 15 and 20 feet in diameter at its base and firefighters had to cut away branches to clear the entrance to Hakone for another car trying to get out, Young said. The tree did not damage power lines.
