Falcons prepare to throw some threes at Pioneer

    By Dick Sparrer

Three-point shooters Micah Weger and Geoff Lamotte were getting their range for Saratoga in a regular season-ending win over Homestead last Thursday night.

And the two Falcons hope that they'll be zeroed in this week when Saratoga hosts Pioneer in the first round of the Central Coast Section.

The Falcons, 15-11 for the year after a 6-6 finish in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, will host the Mustangs on Feb. 23, 7 p.m.

Pioneer, 13-13 for the year, finished in a three-way tie with Silver Creek and Overfelt for the title in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The Mustangs were 9-3 in the division.

Saratoga evened its league record at 6-6 with a convincing 71-54 win over Homestead last week, thanks to the three-point shooting of Weger and Lamotte.

Weger poured in 17 points, including a couple of threes, and Lamotte added 15 points, including three three-pointers.

Spencer Jamison pitched in 16 points for the Falcons and big 6-foot-3 senior Matt Garrapolo added 11 points to give Saratoga four players in double digits.

Dan Goñi and Mike Crosby tossed in four points apiece.

The Falcons doubled Homestead's 12-point output in the first period to jump out to a quick 24-12 lead and they never looked back on their way to the lopsided win.

Earlier in the week, Saratoga had dropped a tough 44-39 nod to Mountain View in a league game.

Jamison pumped in 10 points to figure as the only Saratoga player in twin figures. Weger added eight points and Lamotte had seven, including just one three-pointer. Crosby had six points, Scott Snider four and Goñi and Garrapolo two each.

Mountain View ended up sharing the division title with Gunn, each club posting a 10-2 record.
