'Souper Bowl' to showcase student culinary, art skills

Students in Saratoga High School's ceramics department plan to showcase their culinary and artistic skills all at the same time when they stage their second annual "Souper Bowl" March 2 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the school's faculty lunch room.

The event--no relation to the well-known football event--offers participants a homemade dinner and handcrafted ceramic bowl for $10. Dinner includes unlimited soup, bread and soft drink

Ceramics teacher Leah Aguayo said she began the event last year as a way to earn money for her department, so it could buy some of the more expensive supplies.

More than 200 handmade soup bowls--all made by her students--will be up for grabs.

The instructor said that although some of the bowls are made to match, families often enjoy it more when each member of a family selects a favorite bowl.

Susan Weber, parent of one of Aguayo's students, agrees. Last year, Weber and her family came to the Souper Bowl and each person picked out a favorite bowl.

"The soup was delicious," Weber said. "We use the bowls all the time. They require no special care."

Aguayo said she expects more than 200 people to attend this year's fundraiser. Last year, 160 dinners were sold, and Aguayo said there wasn't even an inch of soup left.

This year Aguayo will have five kinds of entirely handmade soup, thanks to much judicious chopping of vegetables by parents and members of the Parent Teacher and Student Association.

All money raised from this year and last year's events will go toward buying potters, wheels for the classrooms and for stipends to bring guest artists into the classrooms.

Advanced pottery students will also have ceramic items they have made for sale.

"That way they can see that pottery can sell," Aguayo said.

Reservations are not required. Aguayo said the event is first come, first served. She encourages early arrival.
