Columnist speaks to Friends of the Libraries
San Jose Mercury News editorial writer and columnist Joanne Jacobs will talk to the Friends of the Libraries March 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Library community room, 13650 Saratoga Ave. Her topic is "CyberLibraries: Smut and Censorship."
Religion and gender are topics for AAUW
"Religion and Gender in a Vietnamese-American Community" is the subject of a talk and slide presentation by anthropologist Karen Kfjelstad on Friday, March 14, at 6 p.m. at a dinner meeting of the Los Gatos- Saratoga branch of the AAUW.
Kfjelstad is a Cabrillo College instructor. The dinner will be held at La Hacienda Restaurant, 18840 Los Gatos-Saratoga Road. The public is invited and reservations are due by March 10. Call 867-1928.
Chocolate festival benefits youth in crisis
Social Advocates for Youth, a nonprofit organization that has been serving youth and families in crisis since 1973, will host a Rivers of Chocolate Festival on Sunday, March 16, at Villa Montalvo.
The festival, from 4 to 7 p.m., features chocolate tasting and demonstrations by area chefs at the historic villa. Participating restaurants include the Plumed Horse, the Palace, Chez TJ, Bittersweet Bistro and Pearl Alley Bistro. In addition to chocolate, there will be champagne, wine tasting, coffee and hors d'oeuvres. Tickets are $50, available by calling Social Advocates at 253-3540.
Artists-in-residence show off their works
Villa Montalvo artists in residence Paul McDevitt and Susan Shantz will open their studios to the public on March 18, when writers Pamela Bernard and Adam Klein will give readings and composer Alex Freeman will present a sample of his work.
The visual artists' studios are open from 6 to 7 p.m.; writing and music presentations will take place in the villa from 7 to 8 p.m. and a reception follows from 8 to 9 p.m.
Painter McDevitt of England is developing a series of paintings relating to the theme of Doomsday, inspired by Hollywood disaster films. Shantz, from Canada, is working with found objects and tomato paste to create a large sculptural installation during her residency.
Bernard, a poet and painter from Massachusetts, is completing her second collection of poems, as well as continuing research on a project that will address the legacy of the first World War. Fiction writer Klein, here from New York, is working on a novel, Tiny Ladies, and a collection of short stories.
Freeman, a composer from North Carolina, is completing a large work for a full orchestra and working on a commission for a newly formed chamber ensemble in Boston.
Villa Montalvo's Artist Residency Program brings up to 35 artists a year to participate in a working residency for one to three months in a setting conducive to creativity.
