Essay contest focuses on county events

The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County are accepting entries for their annual historical essay contest, in which participants of all ages can win one of six prizes, ranging from $25 to $500.

Essays, which should be between 3,000 and 10,000 words, may be on any person, place or event concerning Santa Clara County, from its beginnings to the recent past. Each essay should include a short introduction or preface, table of contents, bibliography and list of sources cited or persons consulted.

Submissions must be in duplicate, as one copy goes to the Pioneer Archives and another to the California Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. Main Library in downtown San Jose. Winners will receive their awards at the California Pioneers quarterly luncheon on June 7, at which time the top three winners will make brief presentations of their essays.

The deadline is April 25. For a complete list of rules or more information, call Helen MacCarthy at 578-4485.
