Eleven-month-old Robert Galvin of Saratoga watches his mother, Carolyn, as she does aerobics in front of him. When she's not looking, he likes to pull off his socks.

Stroller Jam, jointly sponsored by the Saratoga Recreation Department and the Los Gatos-Saratoga Department of Community Education and Recreation, is a new exercise class designed to help new mothers get back in shape, while at the same time socializing with other mothers with children of similar ages.

Each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at the Saratoga Community Center, moms can be seen stepping, kicking and dancing in time to various types of upbeat music. This is not the typical fitness class, however, as the main "prop" each mother brings is her own 2- to 16-month-old baby, secured in his or her own stroller.
The instructor is Nancy Beer-Larson, who has been teaching aerobics since 1987. She is also a certified Lamaze childbirth educator and is certified through the American Council on Exercise, with a specialty in prenatal and postpartum exercise.
The next Stroller Jam series runs through March 27. For more information, call 408.868.1248, or 408.868.1249.
