    10th annual Forest Conservation Days comes to Saratoga

    The Northern California Society of American Foresters holds its 10th annual Forest Conservation Days event from March 19 to 30, at Sanborn-Skyline County Park in Saratoga. The public is invited to participate all day on March 24 and 25, by hiking with professional resource managers and volunteer foresters, taking part in hands-on workshops and demonstrations, and enjoying various exhibits and displays of wood products. Admission is free, but there is a $4 vehicle entrance fee into the park.

    The weekdays are reserved for schools and other groups. Forest Conservation Days is co-sponsored by the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department, which presides over more than 44,000 acres of regional parklands, trails, lakes, streams and open space in 27 different parks.

    Church hosts a light supper for Ash Wednesday

    The Worship Committee of Westhope Church, at 12850 Saratoga Ave. in Saratoga, is hosting a light supper on Feb. 28, of soup, bread and cookies. After the meal, the church will show the first episode of Reformation Overview; and there will also be a communion. The videotapes, produced by the Institute of Christian History, portray the main characters of the Reformation, including Luther, Calvin, Wycliffe and Hus. The supper/video series runs through April 4. Attendees need not be members of the church. Call 408.255.0955.

    Library Friends host author of a local wildlife book

    Bob Piwarzyk, co-author of Animals of the Santa Cruz Mountains, is the guest speaker at the meeting of the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries on March 5, at 10 a.m. in the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave.. Refreshments will be served, and all are welcome.

    This is the first book of its kind to focus on the wildlife that lives in this mountain range. Piwarzyk, a resident of Bonny Doon, collaborated with Marie Krajci and the late naturalist Barbara Lauck, in chronicling 64 animal inhabitants of the mountains.
