Mar finishes fifth at CCS mat finals
Lynbrook sophomore Jimmy Mar won by technical fall over Van Nguyen of Pioneer to nail a fifth-place finish at 103 pounds at the Central Coast Section wrestling finals held last Saturday at Independence.
Mar's performance sparked Lynbrook to a 22nd-place finish in the team standings, tying Wilcox with 40 points.
Mar lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to Ricky Cacho in his first match, but came back to win five straight to get into the medal round.
Mar beat Brian Reyes of Silver Creek 9-2 and won by technical fall over Chris Olmstead of San Lorenzo Valley before pinning Jordan Felix of Hillsdale, Austin Hitchcock of Greenfield and Jassin Javaid of Live Oak.
Mar was pinned by Victor Lopez of Alisal, but came back to clinch fifth with a technical fall win over Nguyen.
Saratoga's Ori Kawahara (119) and Troy Follmar (215) didn't place, but each wrestled well at CCS.
Kawahara beat Ricky Torculas of North Monterey County 12-4 before losing a tight 10-8 nod to Josh Sha of Terra Nova. He came back with a 13-1 win over Joseph Seo of Fremont and a 4-3 win over Paul Badra of Leland before facing elimination in a tough 2-1 loss to Anthony Sandoval of Gunderson.
It was either pin or be pinned for Follmar. The big Falcon pinned Ben Whaley of Pioneer in his first match before getting pinned by Apollo Johnson of Oak Grove, the eventual division champ. Follmar nailed a quick pin in 1:15 of the first round over Justin Barwick of San Mateo, but then was pinned by Brian Simon of Seaside.
