FORMER SARATOGAN PENS FISHING GUIDE TO YOSEMITE

If you're planning on going trout fishing in the Yosemite area this spring, you might want to consult the Yosemite Trout Fishing Guide. Authored by former Saratogan Steve Beck, the book is full of information about the area in and around Yosemite National Park, including the Eastern Sierra. You don't really need to be a fishing fan to enjoy the book, says Steve's dad, Chuck.

Steve Beck graduated from Lynbrook High School and Chico State University. His parents, Chuck and Jane, still live in Saratoga. Steve, married and a father of one son, makes his home now in Atwater, which is close enough to Yosemite for frequent fishing and backpacking trips. In fact, he has his own fly-tying business there and belongs to the Merced fly-tying club.

The gourmet fare that the homeless folks at Julian Street Inn receive once a month from Saratoga restaurants is good, but Warren Nelson says they really look forward to the night when Jake's Pizza donates dinner. Stephen Crooks and Bernard Tougas of Jake's provided the evening meal on Feb. 14, their fourth time participating in Saratoga Presbyterian Church's food for the homeless program, which Nelson organizes.

Back at Hakone Gardens last weekend was Dr. Morihito Nagai, the benefactor whose grant helped make it possible to build the Cultural Exchange Center at Hakone. Although he has a busy dermatology practice in Japan, he visits often. This time he came to present 100 tea seedlings to the Hakone Foundation. He stayed to help Hakone head gardener Jack Tomlinson plant them.

We caught closing night of Saratoga Drama Group's production of 1776 at the Saratoga Civic Theater on Feb. 17. It brought back memories from when I saw the same show by the same group in 1976, the year of the bicentennial. The younger members of the cast looked younger this time, and the older ones didn't seem so old, but it was still an inspiring show that deserved the standing ovation given at the end. The play, which details the struggle to write and win approval of the Declaration of Independence, should be required viewing for every child studying U.S. history. Bravo.
