Jack McCready
Jack Duane McCready died in his Saratoga home Jan. 27 at the age of 82.
McCready was born Dec. 28, 1917, in Grand Forks, N.D., to Earl and Esther Young. After Earl's death a year later, Esther raised her son alone until her 1924 marriage to Harley Clinton McCready.
A graduate of Bismark High School and North Dakota Agricultural College, McCready served four years in the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps in France and England during World War II. His new bride, the former Beverly Barnes, worked for the Red Cross in Egypt. McCready held a position on Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's staff during the war and continued to serve in the Army Reserve for several more decades, retiring with the rank of colonel in 1976.
The McCreadys moved to California in 1959 and soon established a home in Saratoga. McCready worked for the city of San Jose for 25 years, retiring in 1976 as chief inspector of public works. Among his many interests were traveling, world history and steam engines.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Beverly McCready of Saratoga; daughters Liza Westphalen of Friday Harbor, Wash., and Mary McCready of Palo Alto; sons Dr. Clint McCready of Monroe, La., and Jake McCready of Saratoga; grandchildren Mimi, Peter and Andrew Westphalen and Rebecca, Camy, Clint, John Y., John M., Chad, Jack, Thomas and Daniel McCready; and best friend Robert Carr of Oakland.
