    Wedemeyer Gala

    The Charlie Wedemeyer Celebration Gala, honoring outstanding Bay Area high school seniors, will be held May 20, 6 p.m., in the Imperial Ballroom at the Fairmont Hotel.

    Special guests for the evening event include Peggy Fleming, Jan Hutchins, Michael Nouri and John Ralston.

    Scholarships of $1,000 each will be presented to college-bound athletes who have overcome adversity or challenge and who have demonstrated a positive attitude in helping others.

    Special Olympics

    The spring season is about to begin for the Santa Clara County Special Olympics, and coaches and volunteers are needed. Practice begins in March for track and field, swimming, tennis and golf.

    A volunteer orientation meeting will be held March 9, 7 p.m., at the Special Olympics office, 5730 Chambertin Drive in San Jose. For more information, call 267-2734.

    Celebrity Waiter Luncheon on tap

    A star-studded cast of celebrities will top the field of servers when the annual Celebrity Waiter Luncheon returns to the San Jose Arena on March 8 as a benefit for the sports programs in the San Jose Unified School District.

    Ronnie Lott, the former All-Pro for the San Francisco 49ers, is the celebrity chairman of the event, along with former 49ers coach and current general manager, Bill Walsh.

    Olympic gold medalists Peggy Fleming and Pablo Morales will be joined by a number of sports celebrities.

    The cost is $150 per ticket, or $1,500 for a table of 10. For information, call 535-6119.

    PAL Baseball

    The San Jose PAL Pony baseball league will hold signups for players ages 7-16 at PAL Stadium, Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Players must provide a birth certificate.

    The cost is $40 for ages 7-8, $45 for ages 9-10, $50 for ages 11-12, $55 for ages 13-14 and $60 for ages 15-16. The fee includes a uniform.
