    AAUW holds tea and auction

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Branch of the American Association of University Women holds its 11th annual English Tea and Silent Auction on March 13 at Geary Hall at Sacred Heart Church, 13724 Saratoga Ave., Saratoga. The auction takes place from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by refreshments and entertainment until 4 p.m. In keeping with the tea's theme of "Swinging Through the Years," a quartet from the Sweet Adelines, called In Achord, will present a program of familiar songs culled from the favorites of past decades.

The event is a benefit for homeless women and children. Admission, which is tax-deductible, is $20. Call 867-4383 or 867-6237.

    West Valley Welcomers plan event

The West Valley Welcomers invites all interested members of the community to its Dolls on Parade fundraiser luncheon on March 11 at 11 a.m. at the Saratoga Country Club, 21990 Prospect Road. A presentation will be given on celebrity dolls and their history and craft culture.

Those attending will have the chance to win raffle prizes, including a trip to Hawaii and spring gifts. The event benefits senior programs in Los Gatos and Saratoga as well as A Place for Teens in Los Gatos which is open to all local teens. For reservations, call 252-7145.

    Pastel, watercolor painter speaks

The Saratoga Contemporary Artists invites anyone interested in art to attend its March 4 meeting, which takes place at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. San Jose resident Claire Schroeven Verbiest, this month's guest, presents a program and demonstration of her pastel technique. A native of Belgium, Verbiest is considered one of the finest watercolor and pastel artists in the Bay Area art scene. Her work frequently appears in national exhibitions and art publications. Verbiest has taught art privately and has also served as a juror for local art shows.

The SCA is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network, review each others' works and occasionally paint together. For more information, call 378-7659 or 354-9046.
