WVC offers March events for women's history month
In honor of Women's History Month, the Women's Studies department at West Valley College, 14000 Fruitvale Ave., is sponsoring a series of special events throughout March. All events are open to the public.
* On March 4 from noon to 1 p.m., a forum titled Women Redefining Leadership in the Workplace takes place in room 37 of the Language Arts building. Scheduled panelists are Lisa King, executive director of the YMCA's preschool and after-school programs; Julia Luke, a Silicon Valley sales representative; Lt. Diana Cuenca of the Santa Clara County Department of Corrections; and Pat Hubbard, associate director of the Center for Innovation at Santa Clara University.
* From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on March 8, author Laurel Doud speaks in the Campus Center. Her recent book, This Body, is currently being made into a major motion picture.
* On March 9, KGO radio talk show host Christine Craft discusses the role of gender in broadcasting at noon in the Campus Center. Craft was the plaintiff in a sexual discrimination lawsuit filed against a major national news network.
* March 10 features performance artist Genny Lim at 12:30 p.m. in the Campus Center.
* A forum on women's issues takes place March 11 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Campus Center. Panelists are Dr. Sylvia Morgan, an ob-gyn; Maribel Alvarez, executive director of the Mexican-American Center for Latino Art; and Rosemary Wong, an award-winning educator.
* On March 15 at 11:30 a.m. in the Campus Center, artist Melissa Stevenson performs biodramas of famous women. Her monologues reenact the biographies of Marie Curie, Isadora Duncan, Anne Frank, Joan of Arc and Harriet Tubman. Additionally, posters from the 1995 Beijing Women's Conference will be on display all day in the library.
* A two-person panel: real estate entrepreneur Chris Farber and attorney Sharon Roper will speak at 10:30 a.m. March 18 in the Language Arts building.
* On March 22 at 7 p.m., United Farm Workers president Dolores Huerta comes to the Student Center to discuss her fight for a decent standard of living for farm workers.
* The last event, a tea for Bay Area leaders and their mothers, takes place March 23 at noon in the West Valley Board Room. Daughters include Laurie Smith, newly elected Santa Clara County Sheriff; LaDoris Cordell, Superior Court judge; Amy Dean, chief executive officer of the AFL-CIO; Marchelle Fox, president of West Valley College; Susan Horton, director of West Valley Educational Transition; Enid Allison, Louise Cooper and former Saratoga Mayor Gillian Moran. Cost for this event is $10.
