Artists show their works

Villa Montalvo artists in residence Paul McDevitt and Susan Shantz will open their studios to the public on March 18, when writers Pamela Bernard and Adam Klein will give readings and composer Alex Freeman will present a sample of his work.

The visual artists' studios are open from 6 to 7 p.m.; writing and music presentations will take place in the villa from 7 to 8 p.m., and a reception follows from 8 to 9 p.m.

Painter McDevitt of England is developing a series of paintings relating to the theme of Doomsday, inspired by Hollywood disaster films. Shantz, from Canada, is working with found objects and tomato paste to create a large sculpture.

Bernard, a poet and painter from Massachusetts, is completing her second collection of poems, as well as continuing research on a project that will address the legacy of the First World War. Fiction writer Klein, here from New York, is working on a novel, Tiny Ladies, and a collection of short stories.

Freeman, a composer from North Carolina, is completing a large work for a full orchestra.
