Ex-city manager White named college vice chancellor
Leslie R. White has been appointed new vice chancellor of administrative service for the West Valley-Mission Community College District. His appointment begins March 3.
He will oversee an annual district-wide budget of about $60 million while supervising human resources, computing services, business services, public safety and facilities.
"If I could name an ideal job, this would be it," White said. Community colleges are leading the way for job training in the high tech environment, he added.
White is currently the executive officer of the Fort Ord Re-use Authority, which is responsible for securing funding for the former military base. From 1989 to 1995 he was San Jose's city manager.
White holds a master's degree in government administration from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in public administration from Fresno State University.
Village survey will be conducted by Chamber
The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce plans to survey merchants in Saratoga Village to discover their concerns and ideas for improving business.
According to Sheila Arthur, chamber executive director, once the survey results are in, a meeting will be scheduled. "From this meeting, we're hoping we can find out if they want a village association or if they would like to be a committee of the chamber. We want to do what we can to be of support to the Village merchants," she said.
Arthur said this is the third in a series of area meetings that started with Quito Center merchants and then moved to Gateway area merchants.
To be part of the survey, contact the Chamber at 867-0753.
Saratoga's Fourth of July celebration will continue as planned
Despite the city's financial problems, Saratoga's second Hometown Fourth of July celebration will go on, but without city funding or city employees helping out, said chairwoman Marilyn White.
The celebration again will be held at Villa Montalvo, Saratoga's historic estate for the arts, on July 4 from 1 to 6 p.m.
Some of the popular attractions from last year, such as the Civil War encampment, will return, White said. But instead of a politician as speaker, White hopes to get a local citizen to portray Abe Lincoln and to give the Gettysburg Address. There will be music, food, children's games and picnicking on the estate's broad front lawn.
The committee in charge of planning the event meets March 14 at 3 p.m. at City Hall in a conference room. Volunteers from Saratoga service clubs are needed, White said.
Last year, corporations provided funding for buses to shuttle citizens from West Valley College's parking lot to Villa Montalvo. White said she will again seek corporate sponsors for shuttle buses.
