High school will hold open house
The Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District will host an open house and dedication ceremony for the new science building at Saratoga High School on March 9. The open house will begin in the school's south parking lot at 9:30 a.m. Community members will be able to tour the building until 11 a.m. The dedication ceremony will occur from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
Students and teachers have used the building, which is about 24,000 square feet, since it opened on Jan. 7, 2002. The building has 10 classrooms, a conference room, a faculty room and storage spaces for equipment and materials.
City commission vacancies abound
The city of Saratoga has eight vacancies on its advisory commissions.
Four members of the heritage preservation commission will be leaving their seats when their four-year terms end in April. The heritage preservation commission advises the planning commission on issues relating to historically significant buildings in the city. The commission also recommends designations of historic landmarks, roads or districts to the city.
Three members of the public safety commission will also be leaving their seats in April. The commission oversees crime, fire, traffic and other safety issues in the city.
One seat is also available on the finance commission. That commission assists the city council in budgeting decisions and annual audits.

Rotary-sponsored doctors need help
Rotoplast International, a team of reconstructive surgeons supported in part by Rotary's International Services Committee, will be making a trip to Venezuela in July 2002 to give free surgery and health education programs.
The team is looking for financial help, and as of last week was in jeopardy of canceling its July trip without further assistance.
