Saratoga's Liu helps DACA to new record

    By Dick Sparrer

It was a record set in 1979, and it had stood firmly for 23 years.

But it's a record that stands no longer... the swimmers of De Anza Cupertino Aquatics saw to that.

The DACA swimmers toppled the long-standing Pacific Senior record in the women's 400 medley relay with a blistering finish at the 26th annual Washington Open.

Kelly Blakemore, Erica Liu, Amber Hovey and Roshan Mehdizadeh combined to swim a 3:45.44 to break the 23-year-old record and lead DACA to a team championship at the early season meet.

"DACA's national team made a big statement at the Washington Open," said Karen Montgomery, a member of the swim club's coaching staff.

The local swimmers won the men's and women's combined title in Washington, and DACA also finished in first place in the women's competition.

The highlight of the meet was the new Pacific senior record by the women's medley relay team. In the process, the foursome set a new meet record in the event.

Saratoga's Liu also set new Pacific 15-16 and senior records in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:00.40.

Liu breezed to individual victories in the 100 and 200 breast events, and Mehdizadeh won the 50 freestyle.

Phil Yoshida was a winner for DACA in the 200 breast and Abra Armour won the 100 free.

DACA will be back in action March 19-23 at the sectional championships in Las Vegas.
